Islip's ocean beaches are on Fire Island, reached by ferry from Bay Shore and Bayport, with bay beaches along the Great South Bay. Conditions differ by beach; check posted flags, lifeguard instructions and current county advisories before swimming.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services monitors bathing-beach water quality during the season and posts closures and advisories. Check the posting date; this site does not infer a current advisory status from old results.

Bay Shore, Watchogue Creek Entrance (NOAA station 8515102) is the tide reference, and NOAA buoy 44025 (offshore buoy 30 nautical miles south of Islip) provides offshore wave and water-temperature observations; neither is a beach safety guarantee or a surf forecast for a particular beach.
